No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
