RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
